The exhibition ‘Open Works’ closes with record visitors
The exhibition ‘Open Works. Art in Movement, 1955-1975’, which displayed a broad, carefully curated selection of the works of 37 international artists who sought to profoundly transform the role of the spectator through participation and interaction with the artwork, closed its doors to great audience and critical acclaim. In a little over 4 months (it opened on 28 September), the exhibition welcomed almost 100,000 visitors. In addition to the general public, there was particular interest among families and a large number of schools (both primary and secondary), which organised guided tours to learn more about the last avant-garde of the 20th century: kinetic art or art in movement.
But kineticism doesn’t end here; the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation is working in conjunction with the Contemporary Art Museum of Alicante (MACA) to co-produce the exhibition Light and movement. The kinetic avant-garde in Paris, 1950-1975, which will open soon at the MACA and contains many pieces from the exhibition at La Pedrera.
Upcoming exhibition: Essential Cualladó
Gabriel Cualladó (Massanassa, 1925 - Madrid, 2003) is one of the most top exponents of the movement to update Spanish photography in the second half of the 20th century. A self-taught photographer, Cualladó’s works stand out by imbuing the gloomy post-war reality with humanism and composing his own universe infused with poetry.
Cualladó was a member of the historical photographic group AFAL and co-founder of the group La Palangana, and he was a leading member of the School of Madrid. An avid collector of photographs, he was the first winner of the National Photography Award and earned the Gold Medal at the Fine Arts Circle of Madrid.
Essential Cualladó, co-organised with the Community of Madrid, presents the essence of this artist with a broad yet carefully curated selection of 140 photographs with the aim of updating knowledge of his oeuvre. The exhibition will be open from 8 March to 30 June at La Pedrera.
With this exhibition, the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation continues with its efforts to revive the memory of the most prominent photographers in the second half of the 20th century, with the overarching goal of bringing culture to society as a whole.
