The session

Location: Món Sant Benet

9 November 2019

This Saturday session looks at:

  • River ecosystems: macroinvertebrates and fish.
  • Water quality and bioindicators.
  • Study of the riparian flora in the Mediterranean forest.

In this Saturday session you will discover the natural environment and the landscape that makes up the Llobregat river and its riverside forest located in the meander that forms its way through Món Sant Benet. On the one hand, you study the river ecosystem of the Llobregat river and evaluate water quality by identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates, fish and measuring different physicochemical parameters. On the other hand, you delve into the study of the riparian flora, from the identification of the main species around the river to the Mediterranean forest.

Activities

Activity 1. Study of the river ecosystem of the Llobregat river.

Day: Saturday 9 November 2019

Opening hours: 10 am to 1 pm

Location: Llobregat river, in Món Sant Benet

Activity coordination: Marc Ordeix, coordinator of the Mediterranean River Studies Centre (CERM), and Èlia Bretxa, environmental educator of the Mediterranean River Studies Centre (CERM)

Session given by: Marc Ordeix and Èlia Bretxa

Language: Catalan

Description: Study of the river ecosystem of the Llobregat river. Students do fieldwork to assess the ecological quality of a river and perform the following tasks:

  • Identification and study of aquatic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators of river quality to determine their ecological status and to calculate the biological index IBMWP.
  • Study of hydromorphological indicators and analysis of physicochemical parameters of water with portable devices (pH, oxygen, temperature and conductivity).
  • Study of the fish that inhabit the river and scientific capture to know what species live there, where they come from and why they migrate.
  • Introduction to the concepts of ecological connectivity, maintenance flows and invasive species.
  • Determination, weight and measurement of fish caught and study of ecosystem pressures and alterations.
  • Visit to the enclosure and explanation of the construction of the fish passage to improve connectivity for fish.
Activity 2. Study of the riparian flora: from the Llobregat river to the Mediterranean forest

Day: Saturday 9 November 2019

Opening hours: 2 pm to 5 pm

Location: Shore of the Llobregat river and forest around Món Sant Benet

Activity coordination: Jordina Belmonte, coordinator of the Palynological Analysis Laboratory and full professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). President of the Catalan Institution of Natural History (ICHN). Concepción de Linares, researcher and associate professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB)

Session given by: Jordina Belmonte and Concepción de Linares

Language: Catalan

Description: Identification of the main plant species of the Llobregat river. Study of the transition of plant communities from the riverbank to the Mediterranean forest
