The session

Cala Sant Francesc and Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB)

18 April 2020

This Saturday session looks in to:

  • Study of marine biodiversity.
  • Analysis of biological samples in the laboratory.

In this Saturday session, you will study in depth the study of the marine and plant biodiversity of the Cala de Sant Francesc de Blanes by the researchers of the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB). This Saturday you can meet the main benthic coastal communities in situ, analyse their features and ecological status in the CEAB laboratory, and understand the importance of the conservation of marine biodiversity.

Activities

Activity 1. Study of the marine biodiversity of Cala de Sant Francesc.

Day: Saturday 18 April 2020

Opening hours: 10 am to 2 pm

Location: Cala de Sant Francesc, Blanes

Activity coordination: Gemma Agell, Coordinator of the Area of Scientific Dissemination and Education of the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC) and Susana Pinedo, scientific director of the Laboratory of Identification of Organisms of the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC)

Session given by: Gemma Agell and Susana Pinedo

Language: Catalan

Description: Study of the marine plant and animal biodiversity of Cala de Sant Francesc de Blanes. In this fieldwork session the following tasks are performed:

  • Observation of the different strata in which benthic coastal communities are distributed in situ (supra and mediolitoral)
  • Discussion of the environmental variables that condition the species that live there
  • Practice sampling methods to quantify biodiversity and evaluate the conservation status of communities
  • Collection of samples for further analysis
  • Taking environmental (temperature, salinity) and situational data (GPS, orientation, type of substrate)
Activity 2. Analysis of the samples collected in the laboratory. Importance of the conservation of marine biodiversity.

Day: Saturday 18 April 2020

Opening hours: 10 am to 2 pm

Location: Facilities and laboratories of the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC)

Description: Separation and classification of the different species of algae present in the sample for the qualitative study of biodiversity. Semi-quantitative analysis of algal biodiversity. Assessment from the predominant species of the ecological status of the sampled area and relationship with environmental variables
